The simplicity of the Chemex coffeemaker's elegant hourglass shape has been honored for its design by many prestigious museums, including the Smithsonian, the Museum of Modern Art, and the Philadelphia Museum of Art. Its functional capabilities are also world-renowned. The Chemex uses a thick paper filter that removes many of the impurities that electric makers allow to pass through, making the coffee much more pure and flavorful. It also brews directly into the serving container for simple decanting and cleaning. While pouring, the wood collar keeps your hands safe from the heated coffee inside. All of these features combine to make the Chemex Coffee Maker a true classic. | | | Features: | |

This is one minimalist choice in which you are wholly justified in feeling smugAug 27, 2010 I broke the plexiglass reservoir on my Technivorm Moccamaster coffeemaker (my fault entirely). I expected to purchase another, but was dismayed that the price of an already-expensive coffeemaker had increased substantially in the two years since I'd had mine. I couldn't fathom not having a fancy coffeemaker! Having been raised by home-schooling, back-to-the-land hippie parents in the 70's and 80's, as an adult I have mostly gone against my upbringing and look to technology for all my comforts. However, I am FINALLY learning that sometimes the simple choice is really the best, and this Chemex coffee system is an excellent example of my new mindset.
EVERY coffeemaker I've had, even the amazing-but-$$$ Moccmaster, always eventually turned out lower-quality coffee than when new (and I kept them fastidiously clean). For those who are just trying to pry their eyes open in the morning (or anytime), this may not be a problem, but if coffee is a lifestyle for you this fact is really a bummer. Who wants to keep buying new coffeemakers all the time...there are so many other fun gadgets to spend your money on! Chemex is stunningly simple. Filters. Glass carafe. Ground coffee. Water just off a boil. That's IT. That is truly all you need to make coffee that will taste as good the last time you make it (hopefully at the end of a long and happy life!), as the first time.
Regarding large groups of peeps, I make multiple brewings before my guests arrive and fill a large airpot (I have the Zojirushi, from Amazon also). The coffee is delicious and HOT the entire night (make sure to heat up your airpot with hot water before you pour in the first coffee batch).
So easy. So simple. So green! You'll never catch me grinding wheat with a hand grinder again...but in this case, bring on the simple life!

If not broken in shipping this would be 5 stars.Mar 20, 2010 The worst job of packing a glass item I have ever seen. The pot in it's manufacturers box was put inside another box that allowed the packer to put one flimsy plastic air bag on one side and another on the top. The filters were also in the box on top of the pot. There was no printing on the box to indicate that the item inside was glass. The pot arrived broken. I have had this kind of pot before and really like the way the coffee tastes, unfortunately the shipper didn't pack this item in an appropriate manner.

Unique, intimateMar 18, 2010 Coffee lovers in search of an intimate brewing experience will love the Chemex method. The Chemex pot, when coupled with a high quality filter and a thoughtful brewmaster, will yield a great spectrum of brews to suit any coffee lover's taste. I spent weeks tweaking my brewing process to suit my taste - subtle changes to the grind coarseness, amount of grinds per brew, water temperature, brew time, and most any other aspect of the brewing process will be accentuated and amplified by the Chemex method. This is truly the thinking person's coffee maker. The only downside is cleaning the hourglass shaped pot. It's a pain to get down into the lower half. The Chemex brand cleaning brush is $17- entirely too expensive for a glorified pipe cleaner. My advice? Don't let the coffee sit and create a ring! Empty and rinse the pot ASAP.

makes excellant coffeeDec 17, 2009 I have used a malitta coffee maker for many years, and decided to try the chemex. The coffee tastes the same but the coffee maker looks a lot nicer.

The Best Coffee Maker for Purists!Dec 04, 2009 You can get AWESOME coffee out of this, but it won't work miracles. You'll need to use good coffee, you'll need a good grinder, you'll need to experiment with different grinds, you'll need to experiment with how much coffee to use, and you'll need to experiment with different temperatures. If you're a tinkerer or a purist, the only thing better than this would be the $11,000 Clover machine.
If you're lazy and want to just press a button for decent coffee, this probably isn't what you're looking for.
This is a beautiful coffeemaker that looks great on display while it's not in use. As other people have noted, the Chemex filters are thicker than most filters. I also recommend wetting them before you use them to help eliminate a small 'paper' taste that a dry filter can impart. Cleaning is a breeze, just rinse it out when you're done.
